WHAT WOULD CONSTITUTE A GOOD SEASON FOR BARCELONA?

A poor start to the season led to the sacking of Ronald Koeman & the sacking proved to be crucial. Barca legend Xavi Hernandez was appointed & The Catalan Giants took some huge strides. Xavi successfully launched his style of play & improved most of the existing players which in turn gave better results. Barca faltered at the final games of the season but It was a great 6 months for Barca. Xavi's work hasn't gone unnoticed as a plethora of signings arrived in Catalunya.

ANALYZING BARCA'S IN'S

Barca have bought a world-class goalscorer in Robert Lewandowski who will help Barca convert more of their chances. There might be question marks on whether Lewandowski is the right signing but I fully expect him to carry on his good form.

Robert Lewandowski

Barca also bought a near world class winger who will not only compete with Dembele but make sure they do not lose quality when Xavi rotates. Raphina might not match Dembele's assist tally but he is definitely outscoring Dembele which is more good news.

Raphina

Jules Kounde was also brought in after being heavily linked with Chelsea but Barca found a way. A left-footed Centre-Back might have been better suited to partner Araujo but let me not take away anything from Kounde. Kounde is an amazing ball-playing centre-back who will only improve Barca in possession & off it. There might be concerns about his height but he is a very mobile defender with great pace. He can be played at RB if things don't work out at as a centre back or against tricky opposition wingers.

Franck Kessie was the first singing arriving from an impressive time at AC Milan where he established himself as one of the best Box-to-Box midfielders in Europe's Top 5 league. He will be a great a squad depth option who only improves Barca's already great midfield.

Andreas Christensen followed up a great season where he was a key member of an UCL winning side with a rather dissapointing one. With errors creeping back into his game. He might hope a change of scenery might restart his career.

Following an impressive window, the Catalan Giants may hope to compete but I have analyzed their chances of winning the big two.

LA LIGA WINNERS MAYBE?

Last season was an easy ride for Real Madrid as they started the second half pretty much confirmed as league winners. It wasn't a easy ride as the table would suggest as Barca were close. They had a better XG than Madrid & the defense was roughly the same with Real conceding less goals due to the prowess of Thibaut Courtois. Barca & Madrid have the same squad in quality with Real edging it by having a better keeper. With all things considered Xavi will hope to get more from his forwards as their poor finishing cost them points. Which will be crucial in bringing back the title that has eluded Barca for the past 2 seasons.

CHANCES OF AN UCL TITLE

The Blangurana have found it tough in this competition since last winning it as there has been L after L. With their lowest moment coming last season after being eliminated from the group stages & will hope for more improvement from this season's edition.

Thomas Muller celebrates against Barcelona.

WILL THEY WIN IT THOUGH?

It is way too early to make Champions League predictions but Barcelona has the makings of an UCL winning side.

To answer the question:

Probably not as they still have Ter Stegen in goal & there are much better teams. I do expect them to go deep and possibly reach the semi's but the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid & Bayern Munich are better teams and Paris-Saint Germain still remains an interesting proposition. Stranger things have happened since Madrid won the UCL title last season with no one tipping them as pre-UCL favourites but you may never know. Ter Stegen might have a Thibaut Courtouis season and drop MOTM performances.

In short anything less than 2nd + a Copa Del Rey and a deep run in the Champions League should be considered a failure. As this team is not here to take part but to take over.

HOW DO YOU SEE BARCA DOING THIS SEASON?

Thoughts On The Appointment Of Jose Riviero

Orlando Pirates have announced José Riverio as a new head coach. One might have expected Benni McCarthy or Mandla Ncikazi to get the coveted position and to the disappointment of others neither of them were appointed.José is a great coach and he should be given time like the others before him. Since this is an appointment that caught everyone & everything by suprise . I have decided to examine the task at hand and give my thoughts on how I see him getting on. Benni McCarthy(top) and Mandla Ncikazi(bottom) were being touted as front-runners for the hot seat. THE SITUATION He arrives when Pirates are at a weird situation and people seem to underestimate how huge the task at hand. Having reached the finals of the CAF Confederations Cup and losing on penalties to RSC Berkane but performing poor domestically finishing 6th in the league and not qualifying for any continental football.I will explain later on how this could be a blessing in disguise.Pirates find themselves in a precarious s...
